Well, it has been three weeks since I've found any time to blog. During that three weeks we have destroyed the kitchen and are slowly putting it together again. It is coming together nicely....I think of it as my "grown-up" kitchen, all blue and white and crisp, still small but we can't fix that. I'm so dreadfully tired of washing dishes in the guest bath's tub I just stopped washing them...the tub is literally full of rinsed yet dirty dishes. The plan is the put in the new sink tomorrow. I keep telling myself I will wash them all then. We still have quite a bit to do, but it is all details and mostly easy we just need the time to do it. It has consumed me completely and worn me out.
I made time to make a baby quilt for someone, but bowed out of the shower so I could work on the kitchen some more. Working that little patchwork was a welcome respite for a few days...today the respite was mowing the lawn...funny how that sounds like a chore, but it was so nice to be outside. Spring is definitely my favorite time of year. While I sat on the steps, I saw two hummingbirds darting about and resting in the red climbing rose that is a miracle in itself. The hummers like my Salvia Greggi and generally ignore my feeder, but I'll put the dang thing out anyway. While I was watching them I saw a large bird coming toward me and as it passed close by I recognized it as the red-headed woodpecker who frequents the telephone poles at the corners of the yard. I don't know if it is really called a red-headed woodpecker, I'm simply describing him as red-headed. An interesting and amusing bird to watch....last time I saw one they were pecking and pecking and pecking away in the same place ALL DAY LONG! Seriously, what tenacity. Last week, we saw a small flock of Cedar Waxwings...I had never seen them before and jumped up all bird-nerd and got my field guides and spent some time studying them and making sure they were what I thought they were....very cool. When I told my mom about them she said my Dad used to talk about the Cedar Waxwing....guess I got my bird-nerdiness from him. This is a silly little bird blog I like to check out sometimes: http://www.birdorable.com/blog/
The garden is thriving which is a miracle considering we have sort of ignored it with the whole kitchen-mess. I saw a couple of strawberries while I was mowing and I forgot to pick them...that means I'm heading out with a headlamp to get them....the moon is almost full, but I still needed the lamp to find the little sweeties...I picked two little berries, ate one and saved one for my husband. I actually moaned as the taste hit my tongue. I'm ruined for store bought berries now. One tiny, amazing berry. Every thing else is still in its sproutling stage....cilantro, dill, basil, beans, peas, beets, all just sprouting. Potatoes and onions thriving despite us, though if we don't hill the taters....I just realized I don't know what will happen if we don't hill the potatoes..Anyone? Well, I will just have to find the answer to that one....
My go-to book for all things gardening the Deluxe Edition of The Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening does not address hilling....I must know. Actually, I must go to bed before I turn into a pumpkin.
