27? chicks

I didn't post about yesterday's delivery of chicks in an effort to not jinx them. They arrived at 6:30 am. and knowing what I knew I was prepared for the worst.

When I peeked in the box I was pleasantly surprised to see a roiling mass of fuzz and nary a carcass.

Since I had learned the hard way what a harrowing trip was required for them to get to me (Friday to Monday in a box without food/water and three airport stops) I was prepared to offer them sugar water for fast energy to help them recover. Once everyone was drinking I offered up food and they soon found that too. I counted them over and over again and keep coming up with 27....I guess we got an extra?

I stayed with them until I was sure they were eating, drinking, and staying warm, but felt incredibly guilty leaving them alone after such a long and difficult trip.

After this experience I've vowed to never order chicks from out of state (or maybe even through the mail) again. Hopefully, I can hatch my own chicks in the future and avoid it all together.

Lovely Frittata

My hubby doesn't like quiche so I assume he wouldn't like a frittata. Since he isn't here and I have been eating for crap I decided to make something new for dinner. (It also helps that we have dozens of eggs from the lovely ladies over at Runamok Farm).

Broccoli Frittata

1 medium onion, diced or sliced or whatever you prefer
1 head of broccoli, lightly steamed and chopped
olive oil
salt
pepper
garlic
12 eggs, beaten
1 cup cheddar cheese

1. preheat oven to 450
2. saute onions, add chopped broccoli
3. pour in beaten eggs and stir to mix onions and broccoli through the whole mixture.
4. Salt, pepper, garlic, to taste.
5. Continue to stir 1-2 minutes, until the eggs begin to set on the bottom
6. Remove from heat and sprinkle cheese over the top
7. Put the pan in the oven and cook 8-10 minutes or until the eggs are puffy on top, the cheese is melted and it is cooked through.
8. Cut into wedges, it should serve 6 (though I was a hogger and ate a little more than that....maybe that is why my ass is so big).

I topped it with salsa and a little more black pepper...YUM! and plenty of leftovers for the coming week of lunches at work!

Is this basket too big?

Mom wants to know if this basket is too big?

Bernie the Rooster

Even in the midst of the aforementioned chaos I have managed to create something. This is from a pattern called Brewster the Rooster: Cocky-Doodle-Doo Quilt #514 from Happy Hollow Designs (www.happyhollowdesigns.com). I like to give credit where credit is due; however, please note what a good job I did of picking out my fabrics. I modeled him after one of our roosters whose name is Bernie...Isn't he cute?

First Egg

Our girls have finally started laying...there were two actually and I was so sad that the chickens live at Mom's and not in my backyard (wouldn't my neighbors love that?).

It's like missing baby's first steps! POO!

Guess I better get moving on those nest boxes, huh?

Pics of Chicks

The baby chicks arrived today. I couldn't believe the tiny box in which they were mailed. Tiny. I took each one out and dipped her beak in the water. Apparently you have to show them the water. Whatever. I did it without question, all the while counting them as I took them out. #24 was broken, not dead just sick, hurt, or deformed. It was hard to say. I let her stay in the little box with her own light and water and food. I hope she is still okay when I go to check later. Mom and I are sharing the chicken farm and since we live in a neighborhood they will live at her house. I think I could have spent hours just watching them randomly run from one end to the other, peck around in the food, and jump into the middle of the cuddle puddle under the light. Funny little critters.
JUST A NOTE: #24 is alive and well and completely unidentifiable in the mix of chicks now! Woo Hoo!
